The lavender completely took me by surprise.
I’m drawn to the Arkansas Black Apples, too. How would you describe their flavor to someone (me) who is barely aware that they exist?
Why did the lavender surprise you? I was growing herbs on my sill until the bugs just worked my last nerve and I kept hearing Buju Banton every time I squashed one dead.
Arkansas Black are the coolest of apples. You know how old folks used to salt their apples? Arkansas Black are these wonderful sweet and tart apples that have that natural salty mellowing element to them. My favorites hands down. ♥
I’m obsessed with trying to find/buy the Arkansas black apples. I live in Valencia, Ca. Would appreciate any help please! 🙂
Peggy,
Thanks for stopping by. What are the Farmers’ Markets like in Valencia? I’ve only gotten my Arkansas Blacks at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market. As it’s the end of the peak apple season here, I think we both may be out of luck getting any more this year. I did a little research and found a few orchards out in Yucaipa that grow them. I’ll look some more and see what else I can find.

Peggy,
A funny thing happened on the way to Whole Foods… I guess I’ve been chatting up the Arkansas Blacks a lot. My favorite librarian found them at a local Whole Food here in LA. She’d never had them and tried them because I raved about them. She said they were okay. I knew she was far from impressed. I was at the same WF a week or so later and picked up a few of my own. And they were just like I thought, kinda mealy. I don’t know if it’s a late season thing, but the ones I picked up from WF and the ones I got from the market last week tasted the same. Major blah. Please, if you find them now, don’t eat them. They’re not the amazing crispy tart, salty goodness that they are just off the tree.
