just a few things that made it home from the market…

Spinach | Celery | Strawberries | Shanghai Bok Choy

Okay… So some things didn’t actually make it home from the market.  I couldn’t help myself.  The strawberries were amazing.  Just amazing.

And I’m falling for celery.  I know.  Celery, right?  I feel like I’m back in my DC Chinese Carry-Out days.  Watching the guy making my mixed vegetables (extra spicy, extra baby corn) through the bullet-proof glass.  It wasn’t until I tried to recreate what he did that I had to watch him even more closely.  He steamed the veggies a little before the stir-fry.

I made my carry-out mixed veggies for the first time in years.  Yeah, heavy on the celery.  Mmmmm, celery.

I never knew his name, the cook at Andy’s.  I just smiled and waved and he made it like I liked it.

Lemongrass| Chinese Broccoli| Strawberries| Kale| Apples| Avocado| Cauliflower

I’ve been bland-ing it out for the last few weeks, so that I’m not aggravating whatever the doctor decided not to actually say I had for sure.  Yeah, okay.  More oatmeal, broth and brown rice, please!

I popped down to the market to see what else might fit in the realm of “Food, please don’t hurt me.”  Even though I’m slowly reintroducing, the strawberries almost didn’t make it home.  I might have eaten a pint at my desk.

LAPL at Home | Catching Up

I’ve had 30 books out on loan for the last couple of months.  This is just some of what’s been at home.

It’s been a bit since I’ve written about anything, really.  And books?  Well, it’s been even longer.  Russel Simmons’ Super Rich was much more interesting* than I expected.  Five Ingredient Fix, not so much.

Still looking for my pliers and at books about making jewelry.

*I appreciate that RS is speaking from his own place of truth and connecting to people.  I’d been reading the book on the train, occasionally trying to hide the cover.  As I was close to finishing, a middle-aged white man notices the book and tells me that was touched greatly by it.  This was not the audience for the book I was expecting and in some ways that’s the point of the interconnectedness of our human experience and the common pursuit of sustainable happiness.

just a few things that made it home from the market…

Collard Greens| Eggs| Oranges| Baby Zucchini| Sweet Potatoes

I’ve told you about my egg thing, right?  I ODd on scrambled eggs drowned in cheese as a kid.  Still not a big fan, but I will play favorites.  I’ll always have a place on my plate for a boiled egg.

Saw some pretty fresh ones at the market.  As soon they made it home and half went straight to the pot.

Can I tell the difference?  Eh, I don’t know.  I sure do like them and that really matters.

just a few things that made it home from the market… the other day…

brussels sprouts| navel oranges| meyer lemons| onions

Sorry.  Distracted.  Watching RJD2 interview clips.  Listening to that Mos Def, Diverse, Prefuse 73 track, Wylin Out.  The RJD2 Remix.

Um, Food?  I’m preserving the lemons.  Did I turn the jar today?

just a few things that made it home from the market… just not today…

Today’s trip to the Hollywood Farmers Market was called for rain.  Well, kinda.

I wasn’t really planning on going this morning.  I left the option out there, but, really, I’ve got plenty and don’t need to shop for another few days.  That and and it was raining.  Heavy.  Okay, heavy enough.

Since I’m into process and practice, here’s a bit of what I did with what I brought home the most this month.  I love some citrus.  Made the spiced citrus pomegranate marmalade I tweeted about trying to figure out.

meyer lemons| tangelos| tangelo peel| navel oranges| ginger| cardamom| pomegranate molasses

Recipe? Ha! Ha! Ha!  You do know me, right?  Let’s just say I’m in “perfecting” mode.  I’ll get back to you with the real when that happens.

I do need a name for this creation.  This joyful melange of flavors that has me giggling at the thought of breakfast tomorrow.  Mmmmm, help.

Here’s a quick look at what made it home this month…

Full-Fledged Slack | Wax Poetics

ummm… rectifying this in 3 2 1…

I can tell you where I bought my first issue of Wax Poetics.  I was here, in LA, on vacation.  We were at some sneaker shop on La Brea.  He was eyeing the wares and I was looking at the pubs.  WaxPo got the music dork in me mad giddy.  Putting current obsessions in historical perspective.  Turning me on to people, places and movements that inspired folks I respected.

I devoured it.  Every page.  Every article.  Every photograph.  Issue after issue.  Until, I moved.

I guess I didn’t handle the big change that well.  Honestly, there was a lot going on.  When I left NYC, I shut down.  I really wasn’t listening to anything or anyone that wasn’t already close to heart.  I wasn’t going to shows.  I wasn’t reading and making connections to why I love what I love.

Coming out of that space was slow going and I’m so excited to be open again.

The fix: i♥waxpoetics, hardcore.  still.

I need the back issue bundle and a subscription.  Loved that the issue on the stands when I was about to go to Jamaica for the first time was the Reggae Issue.  It was in a carry-on by the door when we decided to postpone the trip and avoid a torrential downpour.(♥:When is that happening now?) I was curled up in a corner reading it a few weeks later in DC when my mom tells me she’s getting rid of her vinyl.  I ended up all dust covered begging for EVERYTHING; flipping through more Gregory Issac’s records than I remembered she’d had.

If I don’t support what I dig, in whatever way I can, should I really expect it to be there when I find my way home?  I don’t want there to be a next time to find out.  Where’s my wallet?

HFTS | Sipping On That Syrup

just something i picked up at the shop…

I was trolling the ‘International’ aisle at my newly (♥: Oooo, child, finally!) renovated neighborhood conventional grocery spot.  Fine, I was at Ralphs.

Always looking at price points, brands and selection, I decided to check out the ‘Go Not So Far East’ section of the aisle to see if anything had changed.

I wasn’t planning on buying anything until I saw the Pomegranate Molasses between the Rose Water and Orange Flower Water, all seductively on sale.  Oh, $4.99, you are too enticing.

“Why not?” in the store turned into “What took so long?” when I got home.  I poured a little into my hand.  And OHHHHHH, MY WORD.  You’ve got to be kidding me.  This is just…

I loved pomegranates as a kid because each one was an adventure.  I can’t wait to see where Pomegranate Molasses takes me.
